Design and Installations
This Rainwater Catchment Design and Installation Standard, (hereinafter referred to as the Standard) has been developed by a joint effort of the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (ARCSA) and the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE). The purpose of this standard is to assist engineers, designers, plumbers, builders / developers, local government, and end users in safely implementing a rainwater catchment system. This standard is intended to apply to new rainwater catchment installations, as well as alterations, additions, maintenance and repairs to existing installations. Below are the key components within a designed system:

Collection Parameters
Conveyance System
Cisterns and Storage
Potable Rainwater
Rainwater harvesting is suitable for all building types ranging from residential to commercial and industrial and can be retro-fitted to existing buildings or integrated into new building designs. Collected rooftop water can be used for nonpotable (non-drinking water) and potable (drinking water) demands. Additional water treatment components must be installed to treat potable water to drinking water standards. Many households/businesses use potable water for nonpotable needs (see list below). A majority of the water a household/business uses is for nonpotable needs. Utilizing potable water for non potable needs wastes resources and places unneeded strain on local treatment plants. Non potable demands include:

• Building washing/power washing

• Cooling towers

• Fire suppression

• Household cleaning

• Industrial processing
